You have reached the website of Fadi Shayya – architect, urbanist, transdisciplinary scholar, and design consultant. The website is conceived as an archive of outputs and networks. It documents propositional and realized teaching, research, engagement, advocacy, and practice projects within architecture, urban design, master planning, the architectural humanities, urbanism, science and technology studies, and design thinking.

Welcome to my world!

The archive is structured into five key sections:

  • Teaching_ catalogues modules, syllabi, workshops, events, and field trips.
  • Research_ records research projects, publications, and ideas.
  • Engagement_ showcases the impact, exchange, and knowledge transfer.
  • Projects_ collates practice projects in design, architecture, and urbanism.
  • Resources_ offers various assets to download, reference, and build on.

The website is co-designed by my long-time collaborator and friend, graphic designer extraordinaire Danny Khoury, Noureddine Korek and Bilal Awada of the superb web and business development team at Fusion Second, and yours truly. Its design concept draws inspiration from major influences that figured my evolution: the progressive graphics of the 1990s decade, the inspiring energy and networks of Beirut’s Hamra area, and the fascinating power of storytelling. The website has been a long-term project in the making, taking various custom and WordPress forms until it reached its current mature iteration.

The homepage features full-screen sections for legibility and accessibility, and the inner pages organize content as typographic archival boxes. The site width is 1200 pixels, distributed over a ten-column grid. It uses the Inter (Google) and Acumin (Adobe) typefaces and the hex colours Black (#1d1d1b), Yellow (#ebff00), Strong Red (#bd1622), and Gray (#3c3c3b). Its vector graphics are designed with Adobe Illustrator and Adobe XD. All content is word-processed on Microsoft 365, edited on Grammarly, and occasionally copyedited using ChatGPT. The tape and cassette illustrations are based on images from rawpixel. The website takes graphic and organizational inspiration from several web, print, digital, and analogue artefacts, such as Professor Shannon Mattern’s Words in Space, Cinematheque Beirut, Educated Guess, The Avery Review, and Post-Digital Publishing Archive.

The team at Fusion Second developed the website as a custom-built online portal with the following back-end, front-end, and SEO infrastructure. 1) The back-end is built on the Laravel PHP framework for scalability, flexibility, and added security. MySQL motorizes databases. It is also powered by a custom-developed CMS that allows full control over the website’s content and functions as the back-office for managing projects, media, files, user interactions, and more. 2) The front-end is custom-built from the ground up using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, and more. Increased security and performance. Fully responsive and adaptable on all devices, such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, and large monitors. 3) The platform is optimized for Search engine indexing as a whole and parts. This is not just to grow Google rankings and optimize social media sharing but also to stimulate the value of the website content for the public. Making content more searchable and relevant to the public search terms aims to transform the platform into a tailored data tool for students, researchers, and practitioners.
